Institute for Medieval Japanese Studies
The Institute for Medieval Japanese Studies at Columbia University sponsored a workshop in March 1998 on "Shinto Studies in the West." Their website has a list of the participating scholars and other relevant information.
Gateway Japan in Washington, which is a clearing house for this kind of information and operates an online newspaper clipping service and bulletin board. I believe they have a subscription fee to get online with them, but they have produced a series of good resource books called Focus Japan that list academic and working opportunities.
